When most people want to hang decorations, lights, or anything else on their concrete ceiling, they often consider drilling holes. However, this can damage the ceiling and make it look messy. Is drilling the only option, or are there other ceiling-friendly ways to hang objects?

Here are some ways you can hang objects on concrete ceilings without drilling:

  1. Use adhesive wall hooks for lightweight objects
  2. Use a powder-actuated tool for angle clips and pins
  3. Use hardwall hangers on concrete
  4. Use tape only on smooth surfaces

Many homeowners – and landlords too – do not drill into concrete walls and ceilings. The main reason for this is that concrete is hard and drilling can lead to damage through cracks. Fortunately, there are several ways to work around this, so keep reading to find out what they are.

1. Use adhesive wall hooks for lightweight objects

Adhesive wall hooks are great for hanging objects like plants on a concrete ceiling. Additionally, adhesive hooks are easy to use, easy to remove, and do not require drilling.

However, they are not as sturdy and can only hold heavy objects up to 3.6 kg (8 pounds). So, if your item needs extra support, consider using two or more adhesive hooks.

Some of the best adhesive hooks are Command strips or hooks like the 3M Command Ceiling Hooks from These hooks work pretty well for hanging small objects, and some even have adjustable hooks. You can use them to hang lightweight lights, ceiling decorations, or party lights on your ceiling.

The hooks are available in a variety of sizes, with larger hooks able to hold 24 to 36 inches (60.9 to 91.4 cm) objects weighing about 7.2 kg. Smaller Command strips can only hold up to 1.8 kg (4 pounds).

So, always use the appropriate weight for your hook when using adhesive hooks. Consider using multiple Command strips if the item you want to hang exceeds the weight limit. Also, use the hooks on a smooth, clean surface and wait for about an hour before hanging anything.

One big disadvantage of using adhesive wall hooks, in general, is that the adhesive bond on concrete is not as good. Therefore, it is advisable to use the most suitable adhesive depending on the attachment.

For example, pressure-sensitive adhesive is ideal for lightweight objects, epoxy for metals, and construction adhesives for wooden items. Use a polyurethane construction adhesive to attach decorative objects made of ceramic, marble, or granite to your concrete ceiling.

Note that an excellent adhesive bond must have good wetting ability. This means that the adhesive should spread along the surface and not bead up on the concrete surface.

Using adhesive wall hooks

To use adhesive wall hooks, follow these steps for best results:

  1. Use an alcohol wipe to remove dust or dirt particles from the concrete surface.
  2. Peel off the adhesive backing from your adhesive wall hook.
  3. Place the hook on the wall, then apply reasonable pressure on the concrete to secure the bond.
  4. Hold the hook firmly for about 20 to 30 seconds.
  5. Wait for about a minute before hanging your item to allow the adhesive to fully adhere to the wall.

2. Use a powder-actuated tool for angle clips and pins

Another way to hang objects on concrete ceilings is by using angle clips and pins. Use these to secure track lights, a suspended partition, or a drop ceiling to your concrete ceiling. Angle clips come with pre-drilled holes that hold screws or hanging wires.

To attach them to your ceiling, you will need to use a powder-actuated tool. The tool uses the powder charge to shoot the pins into your concrete ceiling.

It’s easy to install the clips and pins, but you need to be careful when using the powder-actuated tool for your safety.

Using powder-actuated fasteners

Below is a simple guideline to follow when using angle clips and pins:

  1. Sweep away dirt and remove any objects from the floor surface that you will be using for installation.
  2. Determine where the clips should be attached and mark the exact spots on the concrete ceiling.
  3. Wear protective eyewear and also protect your ears.
  4. Position a step ladder at the spot where a clip and pin will be installed and load the powder-actuated tool with a blank cartridge.
  5. Place a clip at the marked spot on your ceiling, with the head facing downward, fit it onto the tool guide over the head of the pin, press it up.
  6. Pull the trigger to secure the pin in the concrete, and repeat the process until you have installed the clips at all the marked spots.

If you are attaching a drop ceiling, you will need to install the clips at intervals of 48 inches (1.2 meters), while the rows should have a spacing of 24 inches (0.6 meters). For track lights or the suspended partition, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

3. Use hardwall hangers on concrete

Hardwall hangers are much stronger than adhesive hooks and can hold objects weighing around 11 kg. Ideal for use on concrete, they are quick to install and come with sturdy pins that help anchor the base to the wall. If you are hanging items that weigh more than the recommended weight, use multiple hardwall hangers.

These hangers are great for rentals as they cause minimal damage to your ceiling. They are also easy to remove after use using a knife or pliers.

To attach hardwall hangers, simply hammer the tiny steel nails into the ceiling until the hook sits flat. Avoid hammering on the plastic part as it can easily break.

4. Use tape only on smooth surfaces

If you want to hang decorative and ultra-light items like paper lanterns, you can secure them to the ceiling using tape like masking tape. However, it is important to note that tape is generally best suited for use on smooth surfaces; otherwise, it won’t adhere well.

For heavier objects like mirrors, you can try using double-sided PSA tape or a foam construction tape like 3M Scotch 5952 VHB tape from These types of tapes are remarkably strong, convenient, and easy to use. They are also easily removable when no longer needed and leave no sticky residue.

Tips for hanging objects on the concrete ceiling

To securely hang your objects on your concrete ceiling, consider the following points:

  • Always attach your hook to a clean surface.
  • When using adhesive wall hooks, let the adhesive rest for 60 seconds to achieve a powerful bond on the concrete surface.
  • Use the appropriate hanging method for your object based on its weight, size, or shape.
  • Avoid using Command strips on ceilings that are too warm, such as above a heater or in humid areas.

Hanging lights and decorative objects on your ceiling without having to drill into the concrete is not impossible. Follow the guidelines listed here to select the best option based on the weight, size, and material type of what you want to hang. Now you have no excuse not to hang the lights you’ve always wanted on your concrete ceiling.
